The college launched the program earlier this year to recognize academic excellence, community engagement and student success. The Honors Student of the Week is announced each Sunday in the college's weekly e-newsletter sent to Honors College students, staff and faculty and also posted on the YSU website. There are currently 1,266 students in the college. NK MA SF JT Achievement (Other) - 2019 Dec 18 YSU students attend sales competition Students Dustin Hudak, Kennedy Stanko, Daniel Raver and Anthony Nakley represented at the Inaugural Ohio Collegiate Sales Competition at Cleveland State University. Cleveland State and Kent State students also participated in the event in which they developed, prepared and delivered sales call presentations acting as representatives of the Tom James Co., the world's largest provider of custom and bespoke clothing. KS DR DH Academic competition - 2019 Dec 18 YSU STEM college names Intern of the Year YSU STEM College has named Kalliope Zembillas, a senior Chemical Engineering major with a minor in Mathematics, the STEM Intern of the Year. The honor is given to a student who has shown a high quality of work, has demonstrated initiative, has completed presentations and has had impacted the company with whom they have worked. Kalliope's internship was at the Simon Roofing Research and Development Lab, starting in the Spring semester 2019. Her main responsibility was the formulating and testing of water-based roofing coatings. Other responsibilities included developing new testing methods, streamlining old ones, and data collection and analysis. KZ Academic Award - 2019 Dec 18 Rochelle Richardson is student speaker at YSU's Fall Commencement YSU student, Rochelle Richardson, was the student speaker for Fall Commencement 2019. She graduated Sunday with a master's degree in Counseling - Clinical Mental Health. Richardson is a licensed social worker and practicing clinician for the IFAST program at Psycare Inc. in Struthers. She assists family units with establishing order in the home and stabilizing problematic behaviors by utilizing Strategic Family Therapy. Graduation - 2019 Dec 18 Students present to YSU Board of Trustees Three YSU students delivered presentations to the YSU Board of Trustees during their quarterly meetings, Dec. 4 and 5. Presenters include Carla J. Colantone, a senior in Dental Hygiene, who discussed the university's DH program, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and Nadine P. Jones, a Political Science and Philosophy major, and Zachary W. Mayer, a History major and a minor in Judaic Studies, who together talked about their research on the holocaust, including a class/study trip to Czech Republic, Poland and Germany that featured visits to concentration camps. NJ Business/professional - 2019 Dec 12 Student art featured in McDonough exhibits through Dec. 14 The work of Art students is featured in two new exhibits at the McDonough Museum of Art on campus. The Fall Graduating BFA Exhibition and the MFA First Year and Collaborative Project Exhibition are on view in the McDonough galleries through Dec. 14. HH VA Drama, Artistic, or Musical Achievement - 2019 Nov 22 YSU Honors College students participate in Global Day of Service First-year students in the Honors College at collectively contributed nearly 1,000 hours of service to the community as part of Global Day of Service, held earlier this semester. Students volunteered at 15 sites throughout Mahoning County, ranging from Gleaners Food Bank, Mill Creek Metro Parks and the Dorothy Day House to Habitat for Humanity, the OH WOW children's center and the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. The work included making cards with older adults, gardening and even working with St. Angela Merici Parish in Youngstown to pull debris out of a ravine in Lincoln Park and recovering nearly 250 discarded tires. The event is designed to not only make an impact in the community but also formally start the students' volunteer experience, part of the honors college curriculum. MD JA Community Service - 2019 Nov 4 YSU Awards First-Year Student Scholarships has recognized 249 first-year students with Martin Luther King Merit Awards and/or Trailblazer Scholarships. The MLK Merit Award is a $1,000 merit-based award for new graduates of local inner-city high schools, and the Trailblazer Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship for freshmen that aims to encourage outstanding students from diverse backgrounds. JS Scholarship - 2019 Oct 30 Noor Khalayleh wins top award for research at national conference Noor Khalayleh, senior Psychology major at , placed first at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference in New Orleans earlier this month. Khalayleh won the top award in the education and pedagogy category for her poster depicting her research project titled, "Assessing Life Experiences: Developing an Ecologically-Valid Measure of Critical Thinking," advised by Michael Raulin, YSU associate professor of Psychology.
